Hydroponic Community Center
a self-sustaining flood-proof shelter during emergency and a community space for education and gardening during non-emergency
Team: Emily Guan and Emerald Liang
Location: 59th St. & Rockaway Beach Blvd, Queens, NY, USA
This project consists of a community center that functions as an emergency shelter in the event of extreme weather conditions. The building is located in the Arverne neighborhood in the Rockaway peninsula, an area prone to flooding where the main programs are lifted above the ground and there are multiple entrance points from different elevations.
During regular times, the building acts as a community center that gathers the local with programs such as markets, playgrounds, classrooms, kitchens, and hydroponic gardens. During emergency times, it has the the capacity to transform into a community shelter space that provides food and resting space. The building features a flood-resistant design where the main programs are lifted above the ground and there are multiple entrance points from different elevations.
